An artist’s life isn’t defined by the normal barriers of human existence. Life and death and everything in between.

An artist lives through his art.

It was Zubeen Garg’s pursuit of excellence in art that endeared him to the people of this land. He was a brilliant musician and a beautiful human being as well.

His zest for life saw him seek not just stardom but also the love of people. He wore his heart on his sleeve, radiated pure Joie de vivre, and ruled the hearts of millions of people.

Zubeen was a global star, yet firmly in touch with his roots, with his people. His acts of compassion are part of the folklore of this land.

Which is why Zubeen Garg’s untimely death has brought his beloved motherland to a standstill.

My tryst with Zubeen

I was in my early 20s when I heard the song “Jaane Kya Chahe Man” from the movie Pyaar Ke Side Effects. Navigating through the rigours of life, Zubeen’s heart-wrenching rendition of Mayur Puri’s lyrics immediately found a place in my playlist.

It remains there to this day.

As the years passed, many more of Zubeen’s songs would tug at my heart. Xuna Xuna gave me familiarity when I needed it. Lahe Doi was suggested by one of my closest friends, who, sadly, is no longer around. One of my former colleagues introduced me to Janu, Janu.

Zubeen has also sung many songs in Bengali, and one of my favourites is his Tore Niye Jai. Tomar Amar Prem is another song that remains on many fans’ playlists.

How easily he could switch from Assamese to Bengali to Hindi!

Zubeen's work, his art, unfortunately, remains unfulfilled. His sudden demise has robbed the earth not just of a good musician but also of a brilliant human being.

Music never dies

Music is ageless. Music doesn’t have an expiry date. Music has the power to nullify boundaries, to unite people, to excite, to heal, to cure.

Music cannot be defeated by time.

Zubeen gave his life to music, and in return, he received the greatest gift possible, immortality. For as long as people listen to his music, Zubeen Garg will be alive. His voice will soothe people. His music will heal. He will bring peace to the agitated, and he will inspire hope to the despondent.

An artist’s life isn’t defined by the normal barriers of human existence. Life and death and everything in between.

Zubeen is beyond life and death. He lives on through his art.
