Aye, Sono..

I have completed 11 years of "Aye Sono.." with Sumita today. It has been one hell of a ride, with multiple learning experiences (for me), and multiple chances to improve (for me). And yes, millions of "Aye, Sono..."

The Thinking Me

“Aye Sono…”

Two words. Two words strong enough to strike fear into the hearts of every married Bengali man. Of course, there are different versions of this phrase available in different languages too. The fear, though is the same.

Married men will agree, but in private. Bachelors will wonder what the fuss is all about.

You will probably be sitting comfortably, relaxing, and minding your business. Maybe you will even have a smile on your lips as you ponder over the critical issues in life (Football, Food, Travel), when, all of a sudden...

“Aye Sono..”

The call of the Wife.

Interestingly, you only have seconds to decide - To respond or not to respond. Only have a few seconds to blurt out the “hmmm/haan/aschi”, before the “Thak/Thik ache/Kono dorkar nei” curve that is almost certain to put you in dire straits.

I am certain that if they check the million-year-old caves in Mexico and Spain, they will find depictions of this incident as well.

Millions of years ago, a caveman may have been picking his teeth after a meal, sitting by the fire following a long day evading saber-tooth tigers and hunting prehistoric hogs. And he would have heard the phrase for the first time..

"Aye Sono… "(or some rudimentary version of it).

And what he did next changed the course of life for all married men.

Thankfully, I have completed 11 years of "Aye Sono.." with Sumita today. It has been one hell of a ride, with multiple learning experiences (for me), and multiple chances to improve (for me).

And yes, millions of "Aye, Sono..." too!

But it has also been 11 years of her accepting me as I am. My sarcastic humour. My constant pranks. My tendency to brood after Manchester United lose games, which to be fair, is proving to be a nuisance in recent seasons.

11 years of her pushing me to realize my potential and test my limits. 11 years of being a pillar I can lean on for respite in my darkest days. 11 years of her helping me become a better person.

11 years of those things that matter most in life. Love. Joy. Contentment.

So here’s to many more years of ‘Aye Sono’, my love. Thank you for a tremendous journey so far.
