Manchester United bowed out of the EFL Cup Second Round after a shock defeat at the hands of Grimsby Town on Wednesday, August 27, at Blundell Park. Ruben Amorim made eight changes to the team that were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham at Craven Cottage last weekend.

However, it was the home side who started the game on the frontfoot, and their efforts were rewarded in the 22nd minute, when Charles Vernam gave them the lead. Tyrell Warren then took advantage of some poor set piece defending to double the score in the 30th minute.
The Red Devils struggled to match the Mariner's energy and physicality, promting Amorim to bring on Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbuemo and Matheus de Ligt at the break. Manchester United finally got back into the game through the Cameroonian, who scored his first goal since joining this summer in the 75th minute.
The Red Devils threw the kitchen sink at Grimsby next, and Harry Maguire popped up with the equalizer in the 89th minute, to force the game into penalties. Unfortunately, the home side prevailed in the spotkicks, with Matheus Cunha failing to convert his penalty, and Mbeumo missing his second spotkick.
Here are the Manchester United player ratings from the game:
Manchester United Player Ratings:
24. Andre Onana - 2
Onana did little to justify his place in the starting XI. He was at fault for both goals, and looked unsettled at set pieces. Manchester United's pursuit of Senne Lammens certainly makes sense.
33. Tyler Fredricson - 3
Fredricson looked out of depth at the right center back position, and was at fault for the opening goal. He struggled to deal with the speed and physicality of Grimsby's attack and was hauled at half time.
5. Harry Maguire - 6
The Englishman tried to make things happen from the back and even threaded a big chance for Benjamin Sesko. Maguire showed his prowess in the opposition box by scoring a late equalizer to keep Manchester United in the game.
26. Ayden Heaven - 3
The youngster wasn't up to speed against Grimsby and it cost the Red Devils. He was caught out of position on multiple occasions, but made a good last-ditch tackle to prevent the home side from going 3-0 up. Heaven was replaced in the 64th minute.
2. Diogo Dalot - 2
Diogo Dalot started in the right wing-back position for Manchester United. He shifted to the left wing-back role in the second half, and operated in the back three later in the game. Unfortunately, he failed to impress in all positions, and contributed little going forward or at the back.
13. Patrick Dorgu - 4
Patrick Dorgu was the only Red Devils player who matched Grimsby Town's physicality on the pitch. The Dane, however, failed to cause too much trouble to the opposition defense and was replaced at half time.
25. Manuel Ugarte - 4
Manuel Ugarte allowed Grimsby Town to dominate the middle of the park, and couldn't take control of midfield. He lacked energy in the middle of the pitch and was replaced at half-time. It's easy to see why Manchester United want Carlos Baleba.
37. Kobbie Mainoo - 5
Kobbie Mainoo's future at Old Trafford remains unclear, and the Englishman couldn't make full use of his first start of the season. While he set up Bryan Mbeumo's goal, the 20-year-old failed to provide that spark in midfield which his team desperately lacked at Blundell Park.
16. Amad Diallo - 4
Amad was afforded a rare chance to operate in his favoured role in Manchester United's attack but had an off day. He appeared irritated at his teammates at times, and couldn't stretch the opposition backline. The Ivorian was ultimately replaced in the 82nd minute by Joshua Zirkzee.
10. Matheus Cunha - 4
Matheus Cunha was one of the few players who kept their place in the starting XI but had a slow start to the game. He tried to make things happen, but wasn't helped by the conditions. Unfortunately, the Brazilian missed the all-important fifth penalty kick.
30. Benjamin Sesko - 4
Sesko is expected to become the focal point of Manchester United's attack but doesn't look up to speed yet. He registered two shots on target, but had a rather unimpressive full debut.
Substitutes:
8. Bruno Fernandes - 6
Bruno Fernandes brought much-needed composure to Manchester United's midfield after coming on at the break. He operated in a deeper role to allow Kobbie Mainoo to move forward. The Portuguese almost scored with a left footed long ranger, but beat Christy Pym twice during the penalties.
4. Matthijs de Ligt - 5
Matthijs de Ligt helped Harry Maguire settle down at the back after coming on at the break. The German tried to make things happen in the opposition box from set pieces, and missed the chance to seal the game for Manchester United in second half injury time.
19. Bryan Mbeumo - 6
Bryan Mbeumo was an instant upgrade on Amad after coming on at the break, and caused Grimsby a few problems. The Cameroonian scored a well-taken goal, and also converted a penalty during the first five scheduled kicks. Unfortunately, he missed his second spot kick, which cost the Red Devils the tie.
7. Mason Mount - 4
Mason Mount provided energy after coming on in the second half, and Manchester United equalized from his corner kick.
11. Joshua Zirkzee - NA
Joshua Zirkzee came on late in the game, and unsettled the hosts with his physicality. The Dutchman could replace Sesko in the No. 9 position for Manchester United's Premier League tie against Burnley on Saturday, August 30, at Old Trafford.
