Which song inspires you the most?

Music is one of mankind’s greatest gifts. It is powerful, it is inspirational, and it is in abundance. Which songs do you listen to when you are seeking inspiration? I have a whole playlist, and Udaan’s Aazaadiyan, written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, composed by Amit Trivedi, and sung by Neuman Pinto and Nikhil D'Souza, is one of them.

The Thinking Me

There’s a particular song from the movie Udaan that has been on my playlist for ages. Vikramaditya Motwane’s debut work was a masterpiece, his Chef-d'œuvre.

Udaan was graced by some power packed performances from Rajat Barmecha, Ronit Roy and Ram Kapoor, among others. Tempting as it may be, I’ll not focus on the movie here, but turn, instead, to its soul, which was its music and lyrics.

Amitabh Bhattacharya’s poetry and Amit Trivedi’s tune.

Aazaadiyan (Pairon Ki Bediyan).

It speaks of freedom, a chance to do as you please, without peer pressure, without the regular burdens of life, without the need to sacrifice your dreams. The song is scripted in golden verses, and every word carries deep significance.

The start, though, is my favorite.

"Pairon ki bediyan khwabon ko baandhe nahi re, kabhi nahi re"

The shackles of the feet cannot bind your dreams.

The thought itself is so beautiful, isn’t it? People could bring you down, life could be cruel, your luck could be out, yet none of them can force you to stop dreaming. Your dreams are bulletproof, unbreakable, immune.

Dreams are free like the morning breeze that ushers the day in through your window. They are intimate, sacred, sometimes our only respite. They aren’t affected by the rigours of life.

All you need is a little belief.

Dreams tend to come true if you are willing to have faith

What is a life without dreams, without desires? Without that yearning that keeps you awake late at night? Perhaps something so precious, so intimate that you speak of it to no one.

The good thing about dreams is they do come true, provided you are willing to have a little faith. A little courage. A hot pot of hope brewing in your heart.

Of course, Amitabh Bhattacharya knows. Which is why he writes:

"Iraade hare bhare, jinke seeno mein ghar kare, woh dil ki sune kare na darre, na darre"

The ones whose hearts are green with purpose, have the ability to listen their inner voice without fear.

When I am lacking inspiration, I tend to put my headphones on and listen to music. Somedays, Kinare from “Queen” throbs in my head. On other days, it’s the hauntingly beautiful Reunion from “Captain Correlli’s Mandolin”. There are others too, including Aazaadiyan.

I end this piece with the second line of the song -

Mitti ki parton ko nanhe se ankur bhi cheene, dheere dheere

Even a small sprout has the ability to eventually penetrate the layer of soil and rise to the sky. What’s stopping you?

Au Revoir.
