Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has insisted that Kobbie Mainoo remains firmly in his plans. The Englishman's future at Old Trafford has come under scrutiny after struggling for game time this season.
Mainoo was an unused substitute for the first two Premier League games of the season, but started the midweek EFL Cup defeat against Grimsby Town. Recent reports have suggested that Mainoo is concerned about his lack of game time under Amorim so far. The Englishman was a key figure for Manchester United under former manager Erik ten Hag, but has dropped down the pecking order since the Portuguese's arrival.
However, speaking to the press, Amorim stated that the Red Devils need Kobbie.
“No, until it’s official, I cannot say much. I want Kobbie to stay. He needs to fight for his place and we need Kobbie. That is not going to change, the rest I don’t know how it’s going to finish. I understand that the players who are not playing in this moment are disappointed. Everyone will have the same opportunity to play, you have to fight during the week,” said Amorim.
Kobbie could drop back to the bench for Manchester United's Premier League game against Burnley on Saturday, August 30, at Old Trafford. You can read the match preview here.
What has Ruben Amorim said about his Manchester United future?
Ruben Amorim has cleared the air about his future with Manchester United after some cryptic comments following the midweek defeat to Grimsby Town. The Portuguese had added to the rumour mill by suggesting that 'something has to change' after the humiliating exit from the EFL Cup.
However, speaking to the press on Friday, Amorim insisted that he had been pegged by his emotions after the game.
“I know that when I speak these things… to be really honest with you guys every time we had, or have in the future, one defeat like that, I’m going to be like that. Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years, sometimes I love to be with my players, sometimes I don’t want to be with them. I need to improve on that, it’s going to be hard but now I’m focused on the next game,” said Amorim.
He continued:
“I felt that after the game, I don’t feel that now.”
Amorim has won 16 of his 45 games in charge of Manchester United, losing 17 others.
