Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim believes that his team are not ready to play in Europe just yet. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League last season, while losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
Manchester United, as such, will not be playing in any European competition this season for the first time since the 2014/15 campaign. However, Amorim believes that it will work to the benefit of his team.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, the Portuguese head coach insisted that his team will have to build their base before they can compete at the highest level.
“I think we were not prepared to play Europe. That is my feeling; to have strong games in the Champions League and to play Premier League we need time to develop as a team,” said Amorim.
He continued:
“I said last season we need time to prepare for every game. The games are really competitive and we need to build to our base and then to perform. And then in the future we need to have Europe for everyone to play games.”
Manchester United invested heavily in the squad over the summer, but have endured a slow start to the 2025-26 campaign. The Red Devils lost their opening fixture 1-0 to Arsenal at Old Trafford, and were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham at Craven Cottage last weekend.
Amorim's team return to action on Wednesday, August 27, with a trip to Blundell Park to face Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup Second Round. You can read the match review here.
When did Manchester United last win the EFL Cup?
Manchester United last won the EFL Cup in the 2022-23 season, under former manager Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils also finished third in the Premier League that season and lost to Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
United secured a 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final at Wembley, with Casemiro and Marcus Rashford finding the back of the net. Ten Hag also guided his team to a FA Cup triumph the following campaign, beating City in the final.
However, the Red Devils finished eight in the Premier League and were knocked out from the group stages of the Champions League. Things went from bad to worse for the Dutch manager last season, prompting Manchester United to sack him in October and appoint Ruben Amorim as his replacement.
