Happy Birthday to the Woman Who Still Puts Up With Me

The Thinking Me

I often feel that I am more comfortable with the pen than with a microphone. Which simply means that I prefer to share my thoughts on paper rather than to speak them out loud.
This is a habit that also has its advantages.
For instance, I could write “Sumita, you are getting old” and avoid getting smacked on the head immediately.
If I said that to her in person, however, it would be an entirely different story.
The legends say that you should never ask a woman her age, but they never explain why. I can now confirm that it is because you can get smacked on the head.
Why am I discussing my wife’s age on a blog all of a sudden, you ask? Because, on this day, many, many, many, many years ago, my wife was born. I expect her to have an objection to the number of “many”s I used in the last sentence. I expect I may have to pay dearly for this daring attempt at humour.
Sometimes I feel I do deserve a smack on the head.
Anyway, Sumita grew up and everything was going according to plans, but then she met me. And things spiralled out of control.
But then we do not control who we meet, who our heart yearns for and who ends up becoming an indispensable part of our lives. All we can do is try and ensure that the people who matter the most are happy, all the time.
The happiness I hope to give you
Now there are many ways to make your lady happy. From something as simple as accompanying her to the salon to more exhausting tasks like taking her shopping.
Jewellery, indoor plants, sculptures, books, art – a woman’s happiness can reside in a myriad of things. But there is also a happiness that comes from peace. From knowing that she has a safe haven, a place she can fall back to, where her tantrums will be tolerated, where she can be her uninhibited self without worrying about judgement.
As Sumita gets older, albeit with astonishing grace and poise, I hope I can eventually give her this little bit of unselfish joy and help preserve the person she really is.
Because when you gift someone a happiness so pure, some of that joy brushes off on you too. A life spent in the pursuit of this happiness is a life worth living. Because happiness is the greatest gift of all. And the world today could do with a whole lot of it.
Happy birthday Sumita. I wish you all the joy in the world.
Because every husband deserves a happy and peaceful wife who lets him relax on the couch without assigning a task every five minutes!
Cheers.
